Do we have the same view of “fate”or “chance” that the bible does?
Is there such a thing as luck? Although it may seem like these things exist, there is no such thing as chance or impersonal fate. Man often uses these concepts as a way to cope with life in a way that doesn’t require him to give homage to God. But living one’s life in resignation to chance is not living in reality. Why?
Because this is God’s world whether men acknowledge it or not. All things come to pass by God’s providence, a personal fate instead of impersonal. No matter how people try to suppress and ignore this truth, every man and woman will inevitably face the personal nature of God’s world and their personal relationship with Him.
God brings about all things according to His will (Ephesians 1:11). God controls everything that happens, every decision that is made, and every step that man takes (Proverbs 16). God is in complete control of the lives of men but men are not forced to do anything contrary to their desires. From the perspective of men, it may look like only time and chance are at work, but from God’s perspective, there are no chance events. “The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord” (Proverbs 16:33).
Remember this when it seems like things are going out of control and then if you’re a christian, remember that “all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
