Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill.”
The sixth commandment restates the sovereignty of God listed in the first commandment. The sixth commandment demonstrates God’s sovereignty imaged in man. The sixth commandment condemns the murder of the image of God since this image bears God’s sovereignty. Genesis 9:6 says, “Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.”
Murder is a serious threat to the existence of the family for one image of God is the man and woman together (Genesis 1:27). Marriage reveals the image of God and the murder of that image is a direct assault on the family. It seems that people are confused as to what the sixth commandment means. For example, politicians and legislators allow mothers to murder their children through abortion, but the same politicians are hesitant to give the death penalty to terrorists in our homeland! They say murderers should be given milder sentences and abortionists should be left alone.
In other words, the guilty are kept safe from harm and the innocent are massacred. This is unjust! Christian parents must raise up their children to understand that murder is an attack on the whole family.
