Exodus 20:1-3 “And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
In the first of the ten commandments, God is telling us that He is the highest authority and the entire world belongs to Him. God also tells us that He is the one who sets captives free and that He demands total devotion. He tells them to not worship any other gods because He saved them from slavery in Egypt.
As this relates to family, parents must understand that God claims your whole family, even the children, because Christ saved and redeemed the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Just like God brought the Israelite families, not just individuals, out of Egypt and demanded total allegiance from every family, so Christ makes a claim on all the families of the world, including yours.
Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 10:1-4 “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; And were all (including the children) baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; And did all (including the children) eat the same spiritual meat; And did all (including the children) drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” Parents must teach their children from the time they are born to depend on Christ because He loved and redeemed their world.
There is a principle we can glean from Scripture and that is he who is the savior has the right to demand complete devotion. The State understands this too. That’s why it also commands total allegiance because it convinces the people that it saves and provides for them from womb to tomb. The best way to fight a counterfeit is with the real thing. That is why we must train up a generation that knows the true God and will not bow their knee to any false one. Then they won’t let the state act like a savior.
